9 Common Printing Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Printing mistakes can be frustrating, expensive, and time-consuming—but the good news is that most of them are completely avoidable.

Whether you're ordering business cards, brochures, flyers, postcards, banners, signs, or other printed materials, understanding a few common pitfalls can save you time, money, and unnecessary headaches.

Here are nine of the most common printing mistakes we see—and how you can avoid them.

1. Using Low-Resolution Images

This is one of the most common issues we encounter.

An image that looks perfectly fine on a phone or computer screen can appear blurry or pixelated when printed.

Common low-resolution image sources include:

  • Screenshots

  • Social media images

  • Website graphics

  • Images downloaded from the internet

Whenever possible, provide the original, high-resolution image. Your printed piece will thank you!

2. Forgetting Bleed (and Safe Area)

If your design includes colors or images that extend to the edge of the page, you'll need bleed.

Bleed extends your artwork beyond the finished trim size, helping prevent unwanted white edges if the paper shifts slightly during trimming. For most print projects, bleed is 1/8" (0.125") on all four sides.

Just as important is the safe area. Keep important information—such as text, logos, phone numbers, and QR codes—at least 1/8" inside the finished edge so they aren't trimmed too close.

3. Using the Wrong File Format

Not all file types are created equal.

For logos, vector files such as AI, EPS, or SVG provide the best quality because they can be resized without losing sharpness.

For finished print projects like brochures, flyers, business cards, and postcards, PDFs are typically the best option because they preserve fonts, images, and page layout.

Sending the right file from the beginning helps avoid formatting issues and ensures the best possible print quality.

4. Not Proofreading Carefully

A simple typo can become an expensive mistake after hundreds—or even thousands—of copies have been printed.

Before approving your proof, carefully check:

  • Names

  • Phone numbers

  • Email addresses

  • Dates

  • Prices

  • Website URLs

A second set of eyes can often catch mistakes you might miss.

5. Expecting Screen Colors to Match Print

Have you ever noticed that a printed piece looks slightly different than what you saw on your monitor?

That's because screens display color using RGB, while printers use CMYK.

Because the two color systems are different, some color variation is completely normal. Understanding this ahead of time helps avoid surprises when your project is finished.

6. Using Too Many Fonts

More fonts don't necessarily make a better design.

Using two or three complementary font families usually creates a cleaner, more professional appearance that's easier to read.

7. Trying to Fit Too Much Information

When everything is emphasized, nothing stands out.

Instead, focus on:

  • A clear headline

  • Strong visuals

  • Essential information

  • Plenty of white space

Simple, organized layouts are often the most effective.

8. Forgetting to Test QR Codes

QR codes are a great marketing tool—but only if they work!

Before printing:

  • Scan the code.

  • Test it on multiple devices.

  • Make sure it goes to the correct webpage.

Taking a minute to test your QR code can prevent frustration for your customers later.

9. Waiting Until the Last Minute

One of the most expensive printing mistakes isn't a design issue at all—it's waiting too long.

Last-minute orders can lead to:

  • Rush production fees

  • Expedited shipping costs

  • Fewer material options

  • Less time for proofreading

Planning ahead gives you more flexibility and often produces a better final product.

Work With a Local Printing Partner

One of the easiest ways to avoid costly mistakes is to work with a local print shop that can review your files before production.

At The Biz Zone, we're happy to review your files for common setup issues before production. While we don't typically proofread customer-supplied, print-ready files, we can often identify potential problems like missing bleed, low-resolution images, or incorrect file formats before they become expensive reprints.
